New York's Planned Parenthood will remove founder's name over her views on eugenics

Allison Gordon | CNN

If Margaret Sanger sounds familiar, it's because you might have encountered her in history class.

A nurse and educator, Sanger opened in 1916 the first birth control clinic in the United States, which was illegal at the time. Her arrest and conviction led to a court ruling said that physicians could prescribe contraceptives to women for medical reasons. In 1923, Sanger opened a new clinic staffed by female doctors which eventually became the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Being as it is that I have little respect and great distrust of both of these entities - I find it fascinating (and admittedly, pretty damn amusing) to see how little they respect and trust each other (despite all the grand plans they've laid together)...

And some food for thought to keep in mind here: bishops can become cardinals... cardinals can become Popes...

Viruses can jump from animals to humans mining minerals that are used to make smartphones

Justine Calma | THE VERGE

When humans cut their way through forests to dig up gold and other minerals that go into phones, computers, and other devices, they run the risk of being a catalyst for a phenomenon called “spillover.” That’s what happens when a virus makes the leap from one species to another. It’s how two-thirds of new infectious diseases, like COVID-19, emerge.

KAREEM ABDUL JABBAR: Where Is the Outrage Over Anti-Semitism in Sports and Hollywood?

The Hollywood Reporter columnist calls out the hateful outbursts against Jews by Ice Cube, DeSean Jackson and others and explains how the muted response "perpetuates racism" and contributes to an overall "Apatholypse."

By KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR | The Hollywood Reporter

Recent incidents of anti-Semitic tweets and posts from sports and entertainment celebrities are a very troubling omen for the future of the Black Lives Matter movement, but so too is the shocking lack of massive indignation. Given the New Woke-fulness in Hollywood and the sports world, we expected more passionate public outrage.

What we got was a shrug of meh-rage.

It’s never been easier for animal pathogens to spill over into humans.

By Danush Parvaneh | VOX

Over the past 40 years, disease outbreaks among humans have become more frequent. The majority of those diseases are zoonoses, or diseases that originated in animals, like Ebola, West Nile virus, and probably Covid-19. But what makes zoonotic outbreaks likelier than ever is actually something humans are doing.

MEGHAN ROOS | NEWSWEEK

After George Floyd, raw talk and racial reckoning among U.S. Muslims

American Muslims, Black and non-Black, are having raw conversations as they grapple with questions of racial equity, tensions and representation in their own faith communities.

Associated Press | NBC NEWS

As a young student, Hind Makki recalls, she would call out others at the Islamic school she attended when some casually used an Arabic word meaning “slaves” to refer to Black people.

“Maybe 85% of the time, the response that I would get from people ... is, ‘Oh, we don’t mean you, we mean the Americans,’” Makki said during a virtual panel discussion on race, one of many organized in the wake of George Floyd’s death.

“That’s a whole other situation about anti-Blackness, particularly against African Americans,” said Makki, who identifies as a Black Arab Muslim.

In recent weeks, many Muslims in the U.S. have joined racial justice rallies across the country and denounced racism in sermons, statements and webinars. American Muslims, Black and non-Black, are also having raw conversations like Makki’s as they grapple with questions of racial equity, tensions and representation in their own faith communities.
