Pets of Covid-infected squeezed into bags, people treated like cattle at camps: Unfolding Shanghai’s bizarre lockdown
Amid a surge in Covid-19 cases in Shanghai, the Chinese government has put in place extremely strict lockdown rules and is enforcing them in an insensitive way.

Imagine relocating entire communities of people across areas to control the spread of a new Covid wave. This is just one of the most bizarre and inhuman ways of enforcing extremely strict Covid lockdown protocol by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in Shanghai and its surrounding towns.
People infected with Covid are being relocated forcefully to so-called “quarantine centres” situated more than 100 kilometres away from Shanghai. It is said the Chinese government does not want a repeat of what transpired in 2020 and hence has resorted to enforcing harsh guidelines to stem the spread of the virus.
THE INSENSITIVE LOCKDOWN TALES
Official government notices in areas of spread mentioned that the residents will have to pack their belongings and leave their wardrobe doors open for items to be disinfected. The residents were also told to leave the front doors of their homes open for easy entry.
Multiple images were floating around on Weibo (China’s Twitter) and other platforms showing people queueing up with their luggage and bags waiting for official transport to quarantine centres.
The notices also mentioned that the pets cannot accompany the infected and a separate arrangement will be made for them to be taken care of. There is much speculation regarding this order as multiple social media posts and videos show that these pets have been caught and tied together, possibly being prepared to be culled to control the spread of the virus. There are a few videos in circulation showing officials killing many of these pets but the same is not being shared here owing to the horrific nature of the same.

To have the best idea of how shambolic the situation is in Shanghai and how badly the quarantine and testing centres have been set up, watch the below recording of a German national who was allegedly threatened to be locked up in a quarantine “camp” without having properly tested for Covid-19.
In the recording, one can clearly hear the conversation between the German national and a government translator.
The translator says the government officials will forcibly take the German national to a quarantine camp even though the German national says he is Covid negative, and he does not care for the badly mismanaged enforcement of protocol and procedures in Shanghai. He also added it’s a national disgrace for China, the government, and the officials in Shanghai.
The German can be heard saying that “his kindergarten kids are more organised and procedural when compared to the CDC and the Chinese government” and added that the German Embassy was already informed of this incoherent policy implementation by China. This video has been verified by BBC’s China correspondent Stephen McDonell.
Have a listen to this conversation in English between a #German man and somebody passing on a message from officials in #Shanghai wanting him to go to a centralised isolation centre. It gives you an idea of how #China’s “zero #Covid” system is coming apart causing great distress. https://t.co/qhjIlJ2Rdz

Shanghai has seen more than 400,000 cases during this outbreak, and it is much higher than the numbers China officially released during the first peak in early 2020. These harsh lockdowns have also totally neglected people who are Covid negative but have other illnesses like cancer, heart ailments and others to name a few from getting much-needed medical help in times of distress.
THE CRUEL WAYS OF IMPOSING LOCKDOWN
During times of military coups and national emergencies, people usually fear the sight of men and women in uniform. In Shanghai, people now fear men and women in full-fledged PPE kits.
Take the example of the below-verified video where a group of PPE kit wearing officials nabs an alleged Covid positive victim in the most inhuman way possible, with his relatives and family members screaming to let him go.
This is the case in a country that proudly claims that more than 90 per cent of its population has been vaccinated.

Another bizarre attempt at stopping the spread of viruses was to destroy a local home garden set up by an alleged Covid positive patient. The CCP logic, right or wrong, is to destroy all that has been touched or even present in the vicinity of a Covid positive patient.
Police in Shanghai are destroying the grown vegetables of local residents. Lockdown, shortage of food ... yeah, this makes sense.

The cruellest aspect of this lockdown is the treatment to the pets whose owners are alleged to be Covid positive.
The pets have been tied up into bags together to probably be culled at a later stage. It is not new to see pets killed in China after showing the slightest of symptoms resembling Covid. Here, they are paying for their masters’ sins.

One of the many incidents also includes police and officials forcibly breaking the doors of homes where there are alleged Covid positive persons staying and taking them forcibly to quarantine camps. A 94-year-old woman and her son were forcibly taken at 2 am in Shanghai.
LIMITED, MUTED AND FEARFUL PROTESTS
The intense nature of these lockdowns has resulted in a severe impact on local food supply chains and as a result, people’s groceries and refrigerators have gone empty. Many people across Shanghai have started protesting in a silent but powerful manner.
